The Sooners (13-4, 3-3) began the day stomping Mark Cody's former American team, 35-12, but was unable to overtake the Illini who improved to 13-2 and will take on second-ranked Cornell in the regional finals.
“They fought hard and I really felt like with the way we wrestled American we were going to win this dual and I think our staff thought so too,” Cody said.
OU's ninth-ranked Jarrod Patterson held a 3-2 advantage in the first period, but gave up a fall to Illinois' Jesse Delgado, ranked No. 7, 1:53 into the bout.
Illinois' lead grew to nine after fifth-ranked B.J. Futrell earned a 6-1 win over OU's 10th-ranked Jordan Keller. Keller fell behind, 5-0, in the first period and was never able to recover.
Kendric Maple, ranked No. 3 among 141 pounders, gave OU its first win of the dual after he earned a 13-5 major decision victory over the Illini's Daryl Thomas. Maple acquired four takedowns, a 3-point nearfall, escape and added 3:20 of riding time to earn his 12th major of the season.
The Sooners gained on Illinois after 13th-ranked Nick Lester edged past Illinois' No. 19-ranked Eric Terrazas, 1-0. The only point of the bout came on a Lester escape 0:20 into the second period.
Oklahoma took its first lead of the dual, 11-9, at the conclusion of the 157 pound bout which pitted OU's 15th-ranked Matt Lester against Illinois' Jackson Morse. After a scoreless first period, Lester tallied a takedown and six nearfall points in the second. In the third, Lester added his third nearfall, but gave up a late reversal.
In the 165 pound bout, OU's Bubby Graham dropped a heartbreaker to Illinois' No 12-ranked Conrad Polz, 3-2. Graham trailed by one after posting an escape to start the third, but was unable to secure the takedown to close out the bout.
Illinois earned its second fall of the dual in the 174 pound bout after Jordan Blanton, ranked No. 11, pinned OU's Kyle Detmer in 4:35.
OU gave up its third consecutive bout, this time at 184 pounds, where the Sooners' Erich Schmidtke dropped a 6-3 contest to the Illini's Tony Dallago. Dallago had a takedown, reversal, escape and 2:26 of riding time, while Schmidtke's points came on a takedown and escape.
Keldrick Hall earned his second win over a ranked opponent on the day after he clinched a 6-4 overtime win against Illinois' 16th-ranked Mario Gonzalez. Hall had two takedowns and two escapes at the end of regulation and closed out the victory with a takedown 0:19 into the first overtime period.
Kyle Colling earned a major decision victory over Illinois' Pat Walker in the heavyweight showdown. Colling tallied two nearfalls, a takedown, reversal and 4:19 of riding time.
“We have to have a total, 100 percent, buy-in and when we have 10 believers in the lineup that believe in everything we are having them work on and do then it will take them to the next level,” Cody explained. “They need to challenge themselves to get there and a match situation is the best way to do that. That's what they are going to have to do for them to wrestle at the level they need to wrestle at for us to take home a trophy from the NCAA tournament.”
