Sooners Sit Seventh at Midlands

The University of Oklahoma wrestling team concluded day one of the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena in seventh place with 41.5 points.

Illinois leads the field in first with 61.5 points. Virginia Tech (61.5), Central Michigan (49.5), Northwestern (49.0), Lehigh (48.5) and Oregon State (48.5) round out the top-5 teams with Lehigh and OSU in a tie for fifth heading into the semifinals. 

Three Sooners advanced to the semifinals held Sunday afternoon in 141-pounder Kendrick Maple and 165-pounder Bubby Graham. Travis Rutt is competing unattached in the 184-pound bout. 

Maple, the top seed at 141 pounds, and returning Midlands Champion faces fourth-seeded Mitchell Port of Edinborough, while Graham the third-seeded 165-pounder, who finished in the top-5 at last years event, will take to the Matt against Virginia Tech's No. 2 seed Pete Yates. Rutt will face top-seeded Robert Hamlin of Lehigh. 

Jarrod Patterson (125, unattached), Cody Brewer (133), Nick Lester (149) and Matt Lester (157) are all alive in wrestle-back action. 

Day two of the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships begins Sunday at noon CT with consolation rounds, semifinals and seventh-place matches. The fourth and final session beginsat 7 p.m. With the first third and fifth-place bouts. Finals will air live on the Big Ten Network.
