BOSTON -- The Oklahoma rowing team raced to a 23rd-place finish at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston Sunday, with a time of 17:50.431 in a field of 40 collegiate and international crews.
The Sooners competed against 39 other crews in the Women's Championship Eight event on the Charles River, which included the USRowing United States national team, the same crew that won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, and several other international teams that raced at the London Olympics.
The race was won by the United States crew in 16:13.487. The Great Britain, Dutch and Canadian national teams also finished in the top ten.
"We enjoyed the opportunity to compete and be a part of the history and tradition of the Head of the Charles," head coach
Leeanne Crain said. "We're obviously disappointed with our performance today. We need to work hard in practice every day to continue to improve.
"
This team has a tremendous work ethic, so we just need to stay focused on the training and trust in each other. If we can do that I'm confident we'll see better results in the spring."
On a beautiful fall day with unseasonably warm weather, strong winds made a difficult course even harder, but the Sooners were able to avoid any collisions.
OU finished the three-mile course in the same position they were seeded in to start the race, and just 1.055 seconds behind 22nd-place Texas.
An estimated 347,000 fans lined the banks of the river to watch the world's largest two-day rowing event as OU competed at the famous race for the fourth-straight season. The Sooners were joined by more than 9,000 rowers from 28 countries that raced in 55 events. Over 100 Olympians competed, many against Oklahoma.
The OU novice squad returns to the water on Oct. 27 in Austin, Texas at the Head of the Colorado Regatta. The entire Oklahoma team will close out the fall season the following weekend at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Nov. 3-4.
