BOSTON -- The Oklahoma rowing team will compete at the Head of the Charles this weekend on the Charles River in Boston. The 48th running of the famous 3-mile race will feature over 9,000 rowers and over 100 Olympians on Oct. 20-21.

Beginning its fifth season as a varsity sport, the Sooners were selected to compete in the event for the fourth-straight year. They will race in the Women's Championship Eight event against 39 other crews, primarily from major Division I college programs and select international crews. OU's race will be on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:08 p.m. CT.

While the primary opponent in OU's event will be collegiate crews like Big 12 rival Texas, there are several notable exceptions. The United States' women's eight that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics will be racing against the Sooners. Members of the Canadian and Great Britain Olympic teams will also compete in the Women's Championship Eight event.

“It's a privilege to race against elite Division I and international competition,” head coach Leeanne Crain said. “The Head of the Charles is a spectacular event with so much history and tradition, it's a fun event to be a part of.”

Head of the Charles Notes | @SoonerRowing Live Updates

Texas joins Oklahoma as the only two crews from the Big 12 selected to compete in this year's race. To gain entry, crews must qualify with a high finish the previous year, or go through a selection process.

A total of 705 teams from 28 different countries were selected to compete in 55 events. As many as 300,000 spectators are expected to line the banks of the river for the world's largest two-day rowing event.

First held in 1965, the race on the Charles River is a challenging course. Crews must navigate a winding course through Boston and Cambridge, Mass., that features six bridges. The Head of the Charles is a head race, where crews race against the clock in a time-trial style. The boat with the fastest time in their class is considered the winner.

Oklahoma's fall season, a precursor to the championship spring season, continues with the Head of the Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Austin, Texas. The fall finale takes place one week later at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Nov. 3-4.

The spring season opens with the Sooners hosting the OU Invitational on March 9-10 on the Oklahoma River. OU will have three more races before competing in the Big 12 and Conference USA championships.
