NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's golf team started the season on a high note Monday, finishing the first 36 holes of the 15-team Mark Simpson Colorado Invite tied for third place at the 7,741-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. OU and New Mexico trail second-place San Diego by one shot and leader Colorado by eight strokes.
Coming off an All-American sophomore campaign, junior Abraham Ancer started strong for the Sooners with a 6-under par performance in the first round. Ancer finished the day at 7-under par and in a tie for fourth place out of 84 competitors. He trails leader Beau Schoolcraft of Colorado by five shots.
In his Sooner debut, Michael Gellerman performed well. The freshman birdied seven holes on the day and is tied for 11th place after shooting a two-round 142 (-2).
Michael Schoolcraft, playing as an individual, found success as well. The sophomore shot a two-round 1-under 143 and is tied for 15th place.
Sophomore Eduardo Castiello fired a two-round 146 (+2) while sophomore Kevin Lee and freshman Charlie Saxon carded a 150 and 151, respectively. Castiello finished the day tied for 31st place, Lee is tied for 58th place at (+6) and Saxon is tied for 61st place at (+7).
“Today was a very mediocre start for us,” said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “Abe (Ancer) had a great round in the morning, but ultimately, we didn't make enough birdies. We need to get off to a great start tomorrow and push hard all day.”
Teams will finish with 18 holes Tuesday in a staggered shotgun format. Results will be posted to Soonersports.com.
