EUGENE, Ore. — Fresh off her NCAA title in the 100-meter dash, Oklahoma's Candyce McGrone took sixth in the event Friday at the USA Track and Field Championships to lead nine athletes with OU ties in the second of two days of competition at the event. McGrone clocked a personal-best time of 11.07 with a tailwind of 2.7 meters-per-second. The time was just under the 11.08 she used to win the NCAA title on June 10 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Just two-thousandths of a second from placing fifth, McGrone was the top collegiate finisher as five of the eight women in the final clocked season bests. Nike's Carmelita Jeter won the event with a time of 10.74, the second-best time in the world this year behind the 10.70 Jeter clocked on the same track on June 4.
McGrone qualified for the finals with a time of 11.13 just two hours prior to the final. Former OU sprinter Scottesha Miller finished 16th overall in the event with a time of 11.47 after bowing out in the even't semifinals. OU's Mookie Salaam had qualified for the semifinals of the men's 100-meter dash, but withdrew from the competition to turn his attention to the 200-meter dash which begins on Saturday.
Oklahoma alum and program record holder in the triple jump, Toni Smith, finished third in the event Friday evening with a top jump of 45-3.00 (13.79). Smith was in second entering the finals and remained there until the sixth and final jump when Crystal Manning overtook the Denver resident with a jump of 45-9.00 (13.94).
OU alum and 2010 NCAA 60-meter hurdles champion, Ronnie Ash, advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles. Ash used a season-best time of 13.25 to easily win the first heat of the event's prelims and automatically qualify for the next round.
In his final action as a Sooner, Eric Bailey advanced to the semifinals in the 400-meter hurdles. The Portland, Ore., native clocked a time of 50.89 to finish fourth in the event's first of four heats. With the top three finishers in each heat automatically advancing, Bailey was the top qualifier based on time.
Fresh off her first year of collegiate action, Jesica Ejesieme took sixth in the junior 100-meter hurdles. Ejesieme's time of 13.76 Ejesieme reached the finals after grabbing the final qualifying spot with a time of 13.98.
Two men's distance runners were in action in the junior's division at the event. Danny Nicolls finished eighth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:22.62 while Taylor Wardall came in 16th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:59.25.
