EUGENE, Ore. — Tia Brooks finished fifth in the women's shot put as she and six other athletes with Oklahoma Track and Field ties were in action Thursday at the United States Track and Field Championships. The event is being used this year as the qualifier for the IAAF World Championships in August. Athletes finishing in the top three of their events and meeting the IAAF qualifying standards will represent USA at the IAAF World Championships.
Brooks entered the finals in fifth with her top throw of 57-2.25 (17.43) in the first three prelims throws and did not improve as she fouled on her final three attempts in the finals of the event. The distance is the third best by Brooks this season as the sophomore finished second at the NCAA Championships in the event.
The NCAA champion in the 100-meter dash, Candyce McGrone automatically advanced to Friday's semifinals in event as she finished second in her heat with a time of 11.16. The time is her second best behind the PR of 11.08 used to win the NCAA title on June 10. McGrone will be one of two athletes with ties to OU in the semis as Scottesha Miller qualified on time, clocking 11.32 in the event's first of four heats.
The first round of the men's 100-meter dash saw Mookie Salaam clock his second-best time of the year as he automatically qualified for the semifinals of the event by winning the third heat with a time of 10.09.
OU alum and program record holder in the 400-meter dash, Leslie Cole advanced to Friday's semifinals of the event with a time of 52.73. The Idabel, Okla., native has a season-best time of 51.42, under the IAAF qualifying “A” standard of 51.50.
Brittany Borman finished 14th overall in the women's discus with a top throw of 173-8 (52.93). Borman returns to action on Saturday with action in the javelin. The NCAA champion in the event enters the meet ranked fifth among Americans in the event.
