Stillwater, Okla. -- After a disappointing start to their 32nd NCAA Championship, the 23rd-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team was looking to recover Wednesday from its 25-over par performance in Tuesday's first round. The Sooners fired a second-round 304 (+16) at the 7,416-yard, par-72 Karsten Creek Golf Club, an improvement of nine strokes from their opening 18. OU moved up three spots to 27th place out of 30 teams.
“Overall, I think our guys' attitudes were really good today,” said second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “Our score shows we were better than yesterday, but it still isn't anything good.”
For the second straight day, senior Ryan Sirman was the only Sooner to finish at par or better. Sirman was 3 over par through his first 10 holes, but finished strong by birdying three of his last five. Sirman finished the day with an even 72, good for a share of 11th place out of 155 golfers. At 1 under par, he is four strokes behind tournament leader John Peterson (-5) of LSU.
“Once again we got great play out of Ryan Sirman,” said Hybl. “What great way for him to end his career here. Hopefully he can go out and play well tomorrow and do something really special.”
Sophomore Abraham Ancer had a good day, minus a few costly swings that put him at 76 (+4) for the round. Arguably one of the best par-3 players in the country, Ancer slipped teeing off on the par-3 15th hole, leading to a triple bogey. Still, Ancer finished the day with four birdies and moved up to a tie for 87th place at +9.
“I walked with Abe all day,” said Hybl. “He hit it probably just as good as the best guys playing out here, but unfortunately he made about three bad golf swings that cost him dearly.”
Junior Riley Pumphrey fired a 3-over 75, five shots better than Tuesday, while freshman Michael Schoolcraft and junior Ben Klaus shot 81 and 85, respectively. Pumphrey finished the day tied for 105th place at +11, Schoolcraft is in 151st place at +22 and Klaus is in 154th place at +30.
“We are going to it again tomorrow and see what we can shake out, see if we can go out and make some birdies and put something together,” said Hybl.
Georgia Tech (-3) continues to lead the team standings by one shot over second-place UCLA and by five shots over third-place Illinois. From the Big 12, host and top-ranked Oklahoma State (+9) is in sixth place. Texas A&M (+14) shot 13 over par today and is tied for eighth place while Texas (+24) is tied for 19th place.
OU will tee off Thursday beginning at 7:50 a.m. on hole No. 10.
The top eight teams after stroke play will advance to match play (Friday through Sunday). Live stats are available at NCAA.com.
