STILLWATER, Okla. -- The 23rd-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team experienced a frustrating start at the NCAA Championship Tuesday in Stillwater, Okla. The Sooners, who qualified for the national finals by finishing third at the NCAA East Regional, shot a first-round 313 (+25) at the 7,416-yard, par-72 Karsten Creek Golf Club and are in 30th place out of 30 teams.
"It was a tough day for us and we are embarrassed," said second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "We did the only thing you can't do at a big championship and that is to shoot yourself out of it on the first day."
Senior Ryan Sirman was the only Sooner to finish under par in the first round of competition. Sirman, who like the rest of his teammates began the day on the 10th hole, started hot and was 5 under par through his first 13 holes. His strong play was halted by a triple bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, however, and he finished the day at 71 (-1). Sirman is tied for ninth place out of 155 golfers, four shots out of the lead.
Sophomore Abraham Ancer fired a 5-over 77 Tuesday, his highest opening 18 of the season. Ancer, coming off a first-place finish at the NCAA East Regional, eagled the par-4 second hole from the fairway and birdied the par-5 18th. Unfortunately, two double bogies on the front nine hurt his total and he is tied for 90th place.
Junior Riley Pumphrey shot an 8-over 80 while freshman Michael Schoolcraft and junior Ben Klaus tied season highs with an 85 and 90, respectively. Pumphrey finished the day tied for 128th place, Schoolcraft is in 150th place at +13 and Klaus is tied for 154th place at +18.
"We are going to get better tomorrow," said Hybl. "I am looking for our guys to bounce back."
The Sooners found the 481-yard, par-4 fifth hole particularly challenging, as they combined to shoot 10 over on the hole alone.
Georgia Tech (-4) leads the team standings by three shots over second-place UCLA and by five shots over third-place Alabama. From the Big 12, Texas A&M (+1) is in fourth place, host and top-ranked Oklahoma State (+4) is in eighth place and Texas (+11) is in 13th place.
OU will tee off Wednesday starting at 12:40 p.m. on hole No. 1 and Thursday beginning at 7:30 a.m. on hole No. 1. The top eight teams after stroke play will advance to match play (Friday through Sunday). Live stats are available at NCAA.com.
