NORMAN, Okla. -- Riding the strong play of Abraham Ancer and Riley Pumphrey, the Oklahoma men's golf team shot a 292 (+4) in the second round of the NCAA East Regional Friday to remain in third place in Radford, Va. The Sooners trail first-place Georgia Tech by just six shots with 18 holes remaining at the 7,685-yard, par-72 Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.
Ancer shot a 71 (-1) to finish the round tied for first place among 75 competitors at -3. The sophomore, who recorded four birdies and three bogeys on the day, is tied with Georgia Tech's Kyle Scott, who is is No. 12 nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
After a disappointing first-round 80 (+8), Pumphrey rebounded nicely Friday with his 2-under 70. He carded three birdies and just one bogey as he moved up 36 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 28th place.
Senior Ryan Sirman shot a 3-over 75 in the second round and is tied for 22nd place. Freshman Michael Schoolcraft and junior Ben Klaus both shot a 4-over 76 Friday. Schoolcraft is tied for 34th place while Klaus is tied for 45th.
"Abe and Riley both had solid days," said second-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl. "More importantly, it was another good day for us as a team and I feel like we are primed for a great day tomorrow. It was nice to get all five guys counting."
OU needs a top-five finish in order to advance to the NCAA Championship. The Sooners are alone in third place at 588 (+12), trailing second-place Duke by three shots and leading fourth-place Kent State by four strokes. OU is eight shots clear of fifth-place LSU and 11 shots in front of sixth-place Coastal Carolina.
"We are going to keep with our routine and come out with an attitude to win," said Hybl of Saturday's third and final round. "We are still trying to win the golf tournament and are not worrying about qualifying (for the NCAA Championship)."
A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals have been selected for NCAA regional competition at six sites. The top five teams at each site, along with the low individual from each site not on an advancing team, will earn bids to the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championship to be played May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
