Four Sooners Earn NFCA All-Region Honors

NORMAN, Okla. – Four University of Oklahoma softball student-athletes have been named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Central Region team. Sophomores Keilani Ricketts and Jessica Shults and freshmen Destinee Martinez and Brittany Williams all earned first team honors. It is the second consecutive first team honor for Ricketts and Shults who each earned All-America status last year.

Ricketts led the Big 12 in a majority of pitching categories; including innings pitched (236.2) and strikeouts (389). Her 389 strikeouts are an Oklahoma single record and are the third-most in the nation this year. Her 11.51 strikeouts per seven innings are fourth-best in the nation this year.

Ricketts ended the regular season with a 25-12 record and 1.45 earned run average. She threw eight shutouts in 28 complete games and held opponents to a .184 batting average. At the plate, she hit .239 with 10 home runs on the year, producing a .536 slugging percentage. She drew 30 walks this year.

Shults was third on the team with a .342 batting average. Her 19 home runs led the Big 12 and her 58 runs batted in was a team best. She also led the Sooners with a .768 slugging percentage. Her 32 walks were second best on the team.

Martinez led the Sooners and Big 12 with 72 hits on the year. The lefty slapped also had a team-best .365 batting average. Martinez scored 35 runs and drove in 17. She went 12-for-15 in stolen base attempts. Williams led the league in walks drawn with 44 during the regular season. The utility player had the second-best slugging percentage on the team with a .707 to go along with 12 home runs. Her .509 on-base percentage was tops for the Sooners.

The Sooners face Iona in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Softball Championship on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT in Norman.
