AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 3 Texas got even with No. 15 Oklahoma, defeating the Sooners 5-3 Sunday at McCombs Field.
The Sooners spoiled Saturday night for the Longhorns, using clutch hitting and stellar defense to give UT just its second home loss of the season. Texas flipped the script in Oklahoma's 10th straight game against a ranked opponent.
Down 2-1, the Longhorns scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Taylor Hoagland scored on a leadoff home run, her 13th of the season to match the UT single-season record, and Brejae Washington and Taylor Thom scored from singles before the Sooners' defense and Keilani Ricketts (22-12) could find the final out.
The UT victory split the two-game series and evened the all-time series to 21 games apiece as both teams enter the final weekend of Big 12 play.
For the first time all season, Oklahoma did not win after scoring in the first inning.
Jessica Shults gave the Sooners an early advantage, plating Chana'e Jones during the initial run through the order.
Texas answered in the bottom of the second after Courtney Craig scored on a wild pitch.
Dani Dobbs put the Sooners on top once more in the top of the third, drilling a two-out 0-2 single to score Destinee Martinez, but the flood gates opened for Texas in the bottom frame.
Texas nearly gave away its advantage in the fourth as third baseman Nadia Taylor dropped a foul fly that would have been the final out. Jones capitalized on the mistake by sending the next pitch to right field. An error by Hoagland allowed Jevon Henson to make the game 4-3, but Haley Nix grounded out in the next at-bat with Jones on third.
Michelle Gascoigne worked the Sooners out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, but Craig added an insurance run for Texas in the fifth with a solo homer.
The Sooners had go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the seventh after Jessica Shults reached base safely for the seventh time in eight chances this weekend and Ricketts walked. Texas ace Blaire Luna (27-2), forced Nix into a fly to center field to end the game.
