Salaam Named Midwest Region Athlete of the Year

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma sprinter Mookie Salaam was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year the organization announced Monday morning. The Sooner sprinter from Edmond, Okla., enters this weekend's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships as the nation's top-ranked athlete in the 60-meter dash.

Already named the Big 12 Outstanding Performer of the Year last Wednesday, the junior is undefeated on the season in the 60- and 200-meter dash. Along with his nation-leading 60 time of 6.54 seconds, Salaam is ranked eighth nationally in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.76.

Salaam won Big 12 titles in both events this year and has set Oklahoma program records in each as well.
