FULLERTON, Calif. - The ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team defeated seventh-ranked Arizona for a second time this season as the Sooners (24-6) won 5-3 on Thursday afternoon. Michelle Gascoigne (6-3) got the win, allowing the three runs on three hits and two walks. Gascoigne struck out six. Keilani Ricketts got her second save of the year, pitching the final inning and striking out three.
Oklahoma jumped on the board in the top of the first inning. Haley Nix reached on an error and Jessica Shults walked to put two runners aboard for the Sooners. Brittany Williams brought the pair around on a bases-clearing double to give OU a 2-0 through the first inning of play.
OU got back-to-back singles from Dani Dobbs and Destinee Martinez but a line-out double play ended the second inning for the Sooners. Karissa Buchanan got UA's first hit of the game, a single, in the bottom half.
Nix led off the third with a double to right center and back-to-back walks from Shults and Williams loaded the bases, but all three were stranded to end the frame.
OU came right back in the fourth loading the bases with a walk from Dobbs and back-to-back singles from Martinez and Chana'e Jones. Nix then drew a walk to score Dobbs, and the Wildcats made a pitching change. Shults reached on a fielder's choice but OU again left three runners aboard as the inning ended on a double play.
Pinch hitter Katie Norris reached on a two-out walk and Dobbs singled in the fifth but were unable to score.
Buchanan got her second hit of the game with a single in the fifth, but UA was unable to capitalize.
Back-to-back walks from Jones and Nix to lead off the sixth were the eighth and ninth of the day for the Arizona pitching staff. Williams then drew a one-out walk to push the total to 10. The Sooners left the bases loaded for a third time on the afternoon, holding a slim 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Stacie Chambers singled in the sixth and pinch runner Jordy Clifton advanced to second on a passed ball and third on an error but Gascoigne got Lini Koria to pop up to end the inning.
Javen Henson walked to start the seventh and Dobbs blasted her second home run of the day to give OU a 5-2 lead before the inning ended.
Gascoigne gave up a leadoff walk to Kristen Arriola in the seventh and gave way to Ricketts. Ricketts struck out Buchanan and Alex Lavine reached on a single through the right side. Ricketts then struck out Victoria Kemp and gave up a single to Brittany Lastrapes to score Arriola before striking out Lauren Schutzler to end the game.
Dobbs ended the game 2-for-3 with the home run and Martinez also recorded multiple hits. OU drew 12 walks on the afternoon.
