TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Oklahoma got a six-inning 9-1 win over Northwestern Friday evening at the Kajikawa Classic. A pair of freshmen led the Sooners (3-0) offensively and sophomore Keilani Ricketts went the distance in the circle with 12 strikeouts on the night.
Destinee Martinez went 4-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in two. Brittany Williams ended the night 3-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run blast to end the contest. Jessica Shults was responsible for bringing home four OU runs as the sophomore went 3-for-4 and also scored two runs.
Ricketts moved to 2-0 on the year, allowing just one run on two hits. She struck out 12 and did not allow a walk.
Adrienne Monka registered Northwestern's only run, a fourth-inning home run. Jessica Smith got the loss for the Wildcats, allowing eight runs, seven of them earned, on 12 hits and three walks. Smith struck out six before giving way to Sammy Albanese.
OU scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Brianna Turang scored on Martinez's double in the first to put OU up 1-0. In the second, Chana'e Jones scored on a Martinez single., and Shults' second home run of the year pushed the Sooners ahead 3-0 after three innings of play.
After Monka's home run in the top half of the frame, OU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Turang and Martinez reached on back-to-back singles and both scored on a Shults double to left center. Shults then scored on Williams' single up the middle to give OU a 6-1 lead.
Martinez led off the sixth with a single and scored on a Shults double before Williams ended the game with her first collegiate home run.
Oklahoma returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a pair of games against top 15 teams. The Sooners face No. 2 Arizona at 3 p.m. CT and close out Saturday evening action against the host team and No. 13 Arizona State at 5:30 p.m. CT. Live stats for both games are available at SoonerSports.com.
