Pairs Strong in California

MARINA DEL RAY, Calif. - The Oklahoma rowing team placed first in the varsity eight event at Head of the Marina on Saturday. The Oklahoma contingent also claimed first and second ahead of UCLA in the open pairs event in Oklahoma's first ever trip to Marina del Rey, Calif.The Sooners fielded nine boats in the competition.
The varsity eight took first with a time of 18:28.00 as it was led by coxswain Kiley Poppino, Ashley LaFollette, Sam Fahed, Ivy Brown, Markayla Adam, Rebecca Winchester and Katie Klassen. The top boat in the event beat out UC San Diego's “A” (20:47.00) and “B” (21:22.00) boats for the first-place finish.
Oklahoma rowing also did well in the open pairs event claiming first, second, fifth and eighth. The varsity pairs claimed first (20:54.00) with Rebecca Staff and Nikki Furmanek in control. Nicole Bladow and Meghan Farrell trailed by just five seconds, coming in with a time of (20:59.00). Oklahoma rowers Brooke Sheppard and Kristin Clift beat out UCLA's “C” (22:09.00) and “D” (22:12.00) boats to claim fifth with a time of 21:52.00. Olivia Staff and Kellie O'Reilly rounded out the open pairs event for Oklahoma, placing eighth in a time of 22:21.00.
The collegiate four boats also looked strong with both entries placing third and fourth out of the eight entries. The varsity four boat led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Heather House, Brooke Holleman, Elizabeth Biggs and Chloe Troutt finished with a time of 20:43.00. The second varsity four placed fourth (20:46.00) led by coxswain Tricia Vanscoy, Kristin Anthis, Elizabeth Middleton, Abby Seremek and Maureen Lewis.
Novice rowers hit the water for the third time this season claiming fourth and fifth place. Both squads beat out Loyola Marymount University (23:04.00) with the Sooners first novice eight finishing with a time of 20:47.00 to claim fourth, and the second novice eight finished fifth (20:54.00).
Oklahoma faced opponents such as UCLA, UC San Diego, Arizona State and the San Diego Rowing Club.
The Sooners return to the water tomorrow at the Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport, Calif.
