NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team climbed three spots in the final round of the 15-team Brickyard Collegiate Championship on Sunday to finish in a tie for eighth place in Macon, Ga.

The Sooners turned in their best performance of the event with a third-round 293 (+5). OU, which was in 13th place after Friday's first round and 11th place after the second 18 holes, finished 42 shots behind winner Georgia Tech at the 7,175-yard, par-72 Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.

Playing in OU's No. 1 position, Abraham Ancer turned in the team's best round of the event Sunday to finish in a tie for 20th place out of 84 competitors at 3 over par. The junior, who entered the day in 41st place, recorded just one bogey and birdied the fourth, sixth, 12th and 16th holes to climb 21 spots on the leaderboard. His 3-under 69 tied for the second best performance of the day.

Riley Pumphrey was a model of consistency for the Sooners in all three rounds. The senior shot 1 over par each day and carded 10 birdies on the tournament en route to a 3-over 219 and a tie for 20th place with Ancer. Ancer and Pumphrey finished 14 strokes behind medalist Brooks Koepka of Florida State. Koepka finished the event with rounds of 66, 70 and 69.

OU freshman Michael Gellerman carded a final-round 76 (+4) for a 224 total (+2) and a 43rd-place tie. Sophomore Eduardo Castiello and freshman Charlie Saxon finished in 60th and 61st place, respectively.

"We have had better weeks," said third-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl, "but overall I think our guys learned quite a bit about themselves. We will get better from this performance."

The Sooners will be back in action Oct. 17-18 when they travel to Shreveport, La., for the David Toms Intercollegiate.
