Sooners Look Strong at Head of the Colorado

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Oklahoma rowing team swept the open four event today at the Head of the Colorado claiming the top four spots in Austin. The top boat in the varsity eight claimed second, finishing behind Texas by just five seconds. The other two boats in the open eight claimed fourth and sixth.

Oklahoma's top boat in open four event finished first (18:27.1) boat led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Rebecca Staff, Brooke Sheppard, Nicole Bladow and Nikki Furmanek. The "C" boat finished second (19:11.7), The "B" boat finished third (19:11.8) and the "D" boat finished fourth (19:29.7).

"This is our best overall performance as a team at this regatta, so we are pleased with today's racing. It was good to see us perform well in both the small and large boats from top to bottom," Oklahoma Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "We have one more week of fall training and racing, so this motivates us for next weekend and lets us know what needs to be done going into winter training."

The Sooners took first in the open pairs event with top boat of Heather House and Brooke Holleman finishing with a time of 20:41.6 Abby Seremek and Elizabeth Middleton were behind the top boat coming in second with a time of 20:55.0. Elizabeth Biggs and Belle Stixrood were third. Kaylee Johnson and Marilyn Kozlowski finished fourth. Chloe Troutt and Amber Coyne came in seventh at 21:33.6. Kristin Anthis and Maureen Lewis were close behind finishing eighth at 21:57.8. Oklahoma beat out SMU, Texas and Texas A&M for the top four spots.

The varsity eight took second in the open eight event. Oklahoma was just seconds off Texas' 16:09.4 with a time of 16:14.8. The top boat was led by coxswain Carly Schueler and rowers Rebecca Staff, Nikki Furmanek, Nicole Bladow, Brooke Sheppard, Kristin Clift, Olivia Staff, Kellie O'Reilly and Meghan Farrell.

Oklahoma's other two boats in the open eight event finished with times of 16:52.8 "B" and 17:33.9 "C" boat.

The novice team took to the water for the second time this season, fielding three boats in the regatta. Oklahoma fielded two boats in the first novice eight event, with the "A" boat finishing in third place (18:51.3). The "B" boat finished sixth (20:06.6).

In the second novice eight event, the Sooners finished third (20:23.7) behind SMU (18:15.0) and Texas (18:38.2). The sooners beat out Texas A&M and Baylor to claim the third spot.

The Sooners will return to the water next weekend, Nov. 6, for their last regatta of the fall season, the Head of the Marina and New Port Autumn Rowing Festival in California.
