NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma cross country program travels south as it competes in the 2011 Big 12 Championships this Saturday in College Station, Texas at Pebble Creek Country Club.
The No. 5-ranked OU men's team competes at 10 a.m. CT in the 8,000-meter race. The field consists of three top 25 opponents ranked nationally in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), including No.1 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Texas and No. 24 Texas A&M.
George Alex, Eric Harasyn, Bill Kogel, Frezer Legesse, Daniel Nicolls, Ryan Poland, Kevin Schwab, Aaron Sherf, Jeremy Sudbury and Kevin Williams are scheduled to run for Oklahoma. Five of the 10 Sooners competing ran in last year's competition, which Schwab, Alex and Williams claimed All-Big 12 honors.
Oklahoma's men have finished third or better in every race this season, including winning the Lehigh Brooks Paul Short Run which featured seven teams ranked in the top 25. The Sooners ascended to the program's highest ranking in history this year with a No. 3 ranking
The Sooner women compete in the 6,000-meter race at 11 a.m. CT against three opponents ranked in the top 30 nationally, including No. 12 Texas, No. 13 Iowa State and No. 30 Oklahoma State. OU is currently ranked 10th in the Midwest region.
Competing for the Sooner women are Kelsey Brown, Natalie Crain, Jessica Engel, Molly Ferguson, Hilary Krein, Annie Martin and Kelly Waters. OU brings an array of experience to the meet as six of the women competed at last year's championship.
The women have two top ten finishes so far this season, placing fourth in the Hurricane Festival, ninth in the Chile Pepper Invitational and 19th in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
At the 2010 Big 12 Championships, the men's team placed third for the second consecutive year, and the women finished 12th.
The top team in each race will be crowned the Big 12 Champions and the top 15 runners in each race will be named to the All-Big 12 team. Complete results and a full recap of the race will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly after the event's conclusion.

Baylor started off the season hosting the Twilight Invitational. The women's team won the invitational, while the BU men finished second in the men's race. The men won the UTA Season Opener in Arlington, Texas, while the BU women placed third overall as a team. The Bears then hosted the Baylor Invitational finishing second on the men's side and fourth on the women's. The Lady Bears finished sixth overall at the Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster. Both teams competed against an elite field of 14 ranked teams at the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational, Baylor finished 19th on the women's side and 26th on the men's side. Baylor's men finished 13th at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., while the women had a 23rd-place finish at the Chile Pepper and a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National in Terre Haute, Ind.

The men placed eighth and the women placed 10th in last year's championship meet in Stillwater, Okla.

The Cyclone men and women both won the team title at the season-opening Iowa Intercollegiate. The Iowa State women then reclaimed the team trophy at the Roy Griak Invitational with three runners finishing in the top-15. The women had a total of 128 team points and tied for first place with California. After a tiebreaker, the Cyclones became the outright meet champions. The Cyclone women tied for ninth-place with Michigan State at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The Iowa State men finished 29th.

The Jayhawk men won the Bob Timmons Classic and the women took second in the teams' first meet of the year. The Jayhawks claimed the men's and women's team titles at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. Competing in one of the largest and most competitive meets of the season, the women's cross country team placed 14th at the Roy Griak Invitational. The Jayhawk men placed 15th on the men's side. Seniors Rebeka Stowe and Austin Bussing were the top KU finishers at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, helping the women capture 34th overall and the men place 23rd.

The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams started the season with winning performances at the J.K. Gold Classic. The women's team won duals against Wichita State and UMKC while the men's team earned a split by defeating Wichita State and falling to UMKC. In the NCAA Pre-National in Terre Haute, Ind. the women's team secured a 20th-place finish.

The women finished in sixth place in last year's championship meet as the men came in last place, 12th.

Missouri finished second to KU in both the men's and women's team competitions in the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. The Tigers women's cross country team finished ninth out of 28 teams at the Notre Dame Invitational, while the Tiger men came in 19th out of 26 squads. The women won the Bradley Classic. The Mizzou men's team finished 15th out of 35 teams at the NCAA Pre-Nationals.

Texas' "B" team finished third in the Grass Routes Grand Prix in its first competition to start off the year. Running with 20 ranked teams and 38 overall squads from around the country, the Texas the Longhorns finished sixth at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The men's B team took first place in the 5K Concordia Invitational.

Henry Lelei placed eighth at the Notre Dame Invitational to help lead the Aggie men to a seventh-place finish and defeat four nationally ranked teams in the process. The Texas A&M men finished ahead of seven nationally ranked teams while tying No. 10 Oregon for 14th place in the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

The men's team placed seventh out of ten teams competing in the same event. The men placed 19th and the women placed fourth out at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
