OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Oklahoma Rowing team closed out action at the Head of the Oklahoma Sunday with the open pairs and open fours recording top collegiate finishes in their respective events. The Sooners' varsity open pairs came in second behind the U.S. National Team beating out Iowa and Big 12 foe Kansas.The varsity open four boat claimed first beating out Kansas and Colorado State. The Sooners had nine out of 12 boats entered place in the top 10.
"We raced multiple events over the weekend and gained valuable experience, especially in the small boats," Oklahoma Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "I was really impressed with our open pairs and fours. We had three pairs finish in the top five and our fours held on to the top three spots in their event, so we've got to be pretty happy with that."
In the open pairs 4,000-meter race, the Sooners' top boat with Rebecca Staff at stroke and Meghan Farrell at the bow finished second with a time of 17 minutes, 5.713 seconds.
"It was a pretty crazy race, our course was not perfect, but we managed to pull through and come in second," Rebecca Staff said. "Overall we are happy with it and it's good to know that we can improve on some things."
Two other Oklahoma pairs rounded out the top five in the open pairs. In the "B" boat Nikki Furmanek and Sarah Kelle finished fourth with a time of 17:26.994, and Ivy Brown and and Kristin Clift crossed the line in 17:35.326.
In the 4,000-meter open four race the top boat, led by coxswain Patricia Vanscoy and rowers Maureen Lewis, Krsitin Anthis, Kelsey O'Grady and Samatha Fahed, claimed first with a time of 16:11.879.
Boats "B" and "C" claimed second and third in the open fours as the Sooners swept the top three spots in the event.
