MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Karen Shump and Ronnie Ash each claimed gold for Team USA Friday at the U-23 NACAC Championships in Miramar, Fla. Shump easily won gold in the shot put with a personal best as Team USA claimed the top two spots in the final standings while Ash ran away with the 110-meter hurdles title defeating competitors from five countries in the process.
Shump's top throw of 57-2.25 (17.43) beat her teammate Anna Jeimini, who finished second, by over two feet as Jeimini finished with a top throw of 54-4.75 (16.58). Shump's winning throw came on her fifth of six attempts, but was never challenged as the Media, Pa., native who recently finished her redshirt-freshman season led wire-to-wire with an opening throw of 54-9.25 (16.69). The throw eclipsed Shump's previous best of 56-3.00 (17.14) by close to a foot.
Ash, who finished third in the 110 hurdles at the USA Championships, clocked a PR of 12.98, beating Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados by over a tenth of a second. Ash's time, with a tailwind of 3.1 meters-per second, was just the fourth sub 13-second 110 hurdles time in the world this year. David Oliver of the United States owns the other three sub 13-second times this year.
Action at the event for OU athletes resumes Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST as Brittany Borman competes in the javelin.
