DES MOINES, Iowa — Oklahoma athletes wrapped up competition at the USA Track and Field Championships Sunday at Drake Stadium with three current OU athletes and one alum capturing top-10 finishes. The group was led by Ronnie Ash who finished third in the 110-meter hurdles and Mookie Salaam who advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash where he finished seventh.
Running against two Olympic medalists in the 110 hurdles, Ash clocked a personal best 13.19 in the finals, a little over two hours after lowering his PR in the semifinals of the event with a time of 13.24. The time gave the Raleigh, N.C., the No. 1 seed in the finals. Ash ran 13.69 in the first round of the event on Saturday. 2008 Olympic bronze medallist David Oliver won the event with a time of 12.93. Ash defeated 2008 Olympic silver medalist, David Payne, who finished fourth in 13.28.
Salaam was the first Sooner on the track as he competed in the 200-meter dash. The Edmond, Okla., native ran his third fastest time of the season, 20.52, as he crossed the line in seventh in a field that featured two former Olympians. 2008 Olympic finalist Wallace Spearmon won the event with a time of 19.77.
One of only two collegiate athletes in the final, Salaam advanced as the No. 2 seed after clocking a time of 20.53 in the event's semifinals. The time was Salaam's fourth best of the season. The time came a day after Salaam ran 20.78 in the first round Saturday.
Two days after finishing seventh in the javelin at the meet, Brittany Borman returned to the throws area of Drake Stadium to claim 10th in the women's discus. Borman's top effort of 164-8 (50.20) came on her first attempt. Borman was in eighth after the attempt but was unable to remain in the top eight that advanced to the finals as she fouled on her next two attempts.
The OU record holder in the shot put, Oklahoma alum Kevin Bookout finished 10th in the event Sunday as he recorded a throw of 63-0.25 (19.21) on his third attempt.
Bookout was one of two OU alums in action on the day as Leslie Cole finished 12th in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.89.
