DES MOINES, Iowa — Oklahoma senior Amy Backel closed our her collegiate career Friday at the USA Track and Field Championships by finishing sixth overall and first among collegiate athletes in the women's javelin. Backel was one of two Sooners in the finals as sophomore Brittany Borman finished seventh to give the duo a 1-2 finish among collegiate athletes.
Backel waited until her sixth and final attempt to unleash her top throw of the day, 174-1 (53.08), however Backel was in sixth after her fourth attempt. The throw was the second longest of the season for the senior who recorded a throw of 182-5 (55.60) to win the Big 12 Championship in the event. Borman battled with Backel throughout the event before finishing seventh with a top throw of 170-1 (51.85). Asics' Kara Patterson won the event by breaking a three-year old American record with a throw of 218-9 (66.67). Patterson won the event by 34 feet.
Backel qualified for the finals in seventh place after three throws before jumping Borman with a throw of 171-2 (52.18) on her fourth attempt. The throw would hold until Backel finished with her final distance. Backel and Borman took turns jumping each other in the standings throughout their first four throws.
Eric Bailey closed out his year by finishing 12th in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.02. Running in the second heat of the semifinals, Bailey missed the fourth place cutoff as South Florida's David Aristil grabbed the final qualifying spot with a time of 50.34. Bailey qualified for the semifinals of the event with the 11th-best time in the quarterfinals, 51.13.
Triple jumper Neelon Greenwood saw his season end as he finished 15th overall in the event. Greenwood's best jump of 51-0.25 (15.55) came on his third attempt after opening with 50-8.25 (15.45). Kenta Bell won the event with a jump of 55-10.25 (17.02).
Oklahoma alum Leslie Cole finished 14th overall in the women's 400-meter dash as she clocked a time of 53.86 in the event's semifinals. Cole was less than a second from advancing to the final as the cutoff time in the Idabel, Okla., native's heat was 52.97. The OU record holder in the event, Cole grabbed the final qualifying spot in the semifinals with a time of 53.77 in the quarterfinals.
Oklahoma action at the event resumes on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. CST as Tia Brooks and Karen Shump compete in the women's shot put.
