NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma freshman Rebecca Staff has been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2010 Division All-South Region first team. Senior Chelsea Moore earned second team honors. The awards recognize the outstanding performance of rowers and coxswains from each region.
Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
Staff, stroke, and Moore, 7 seat, were members of the first varsity eight. The squad placed seventh regionally at the NCAA South/Central meet and second in the event at the Big 12 Championship. The duo also earned a silver medal at the SIRA Championships and was a part of the team that defeated Alabama and Old Dominion in a tri-meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Sooners also placed second in the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. Staff and Moore were named to the All-Conference USA team.
“Rebecca and Chelsea are very worthy of all-region honors,” said Oklahoma head coach Leeanne Crain. “Rebecca had a great freshman season and was instrumental in the success of the varsity eight. She's a born racer, and it will be fun to follow her career because she's got a great future ahead of her. Chelsea was a team leader on and off the water this year. She was exactly what we needed in 7 seat behind our freshman stroke. It was a perfect balance of maturity and killer instinct.”
The Sooners had nine student-athletes earn scholar-athlete recognition from the CRCA. Athletes must be in her second, third of fourth year of eligibility. Nominees must have rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or race in a regional conference meet. All scholar-athletes must have a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or better.
“I am very proud of our nine scholar-athletes,” Crain added. “This is something we take great pride in and these young ladies are shining examples of what we're striving for on and off the water.”
Oklahoma's honorees included Nicole Furmanek (elementary education), Amanda Hoffman (geographic information sciences), Maureen Lewis (pre-medicine), Moore (public relations), Katrin Passlack (mechanical engineering), Lauren Price (biochemistry), Katherine Rabe (chemistry/biochemistry), Brooke Sheppard (international business) and Kelsey Witten (journalism).
