Crain Adds Klassen, Adam to Recruiting Class

NORMAN, Okla.-- University of Oklahoma head rowing coach Leeanne Crain has announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Those student-athletes are Katie Klassen (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario/Eden) and Markayla Adam (Niagara Falls, Ontario./A.N. Myer Secondary School). The pair will begin competing for the Sooners during the 2010-11 academic year.
Klassen hailes from Niagara on the Lake, Ontario where she was a varsity rower for four years. Klassen was named the 2008 Oarswomen of the Year and won the gold in the junior 63 kg., four in 2008 and earned a bronze in the senior 63 kg., four in 2009 at the Canadian Secondary Rowing Championships. In 2010, Klassen won the gold in the senior 145 lb., at the Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships.
As a rower for the Ridley Graduate Boat Club, she helped her team to a gold medal in the junior women's four at the Ontario Championships in 2009, a second place finish in the junior women's four at the Royal Canadian Henley in 2009 and a silver medal in the junior women's two at the Head of the Fish.
“I chose to attend OU because of the strong academic tradition and the exciting rowing program,” Klassen said. “The facilities, crew and coaching at Oklahoma made me want to be part of the team.”
Adam, a native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, was a member of the St. Catharine's Rowing Club for four years. At St. Catharine's, Adam rowed sweep and also sculled, and was nominated for Oarswoman of the Year in 2009. Adam was the A.N. Myer Rower of the Year in 2008 and also holds an associate certificate in Scottish dance.
“Oklahoma has a well-known athletic department, and an excellent academic aspect,” Adam said. “There are many resources and opportunities offered, allowing me to be successful.”
Head Coach Leeanne Crain is excited about the incoming freshmen.“St. Catherine's and Ridley have produced some of the finest college prospects and we are thrilled that these two have decided to row for the University of Oklahoma,” Crain said. “Katie and Markayla have both had successful high school careers and I expect them to be big contributors to the OU program.”
The signing of Klassen and Adam brings OU's 2010 class of newcomers to five. The duo will join Belle Stixrood, Maggie Schaefer and Melissa Simpson.
