Rowing Prepares for NCAA Regional

NORMAN, Okla.—The University of Oklahoma rowing team competes at the NCAA South/Central Regional Saturday, May 15, in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as the sixth overall seed in the South region.

Preliminary rounds begin on Saturday with the championship round on Sunday. The Sooners enter five boats to vie for a spot to compete at the National Championship, as well as a shot at the Conference USA title.

The C-USA championship is held in conjunction with the NCAA South/Central Region Sprints. Winners will be determined in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events according to the South/Central results. C-USA is made up Oklahoma, Tulsa, Central Florida, SMU, Texas, Kansas, Kansas State, Alabama and Tennessee.

OU begins preliminary racing with the open four at 8 a.m. CT against Tennessee “A”, Virginia “A”, Ohio State and Notre Dame “B”. The open four is comprised of coxswain Haley Brown, McKenzie Lee, Maureen Lewis, Sam Fahed and Brooke Homer.

The novice eight race at 8:40 a.m. against Kansas, Notre Dame, Wisconsin “A”, Michigan State, Alabama and Tennessee. The first place finisher advances to the A final.

This season the novice finished ahead of Kansas at the Big 12 Championship and the OU Invitational, and finished one second behind Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Sooner varsity four led by coxswain Lauren Price, Brooke Holleman, Heather House, Elizabeth Blanche and Monique Gaines, race at 9 a.m. OU competes against Tennessee, Virginia, Minnesota and Indiana.

The varsity four met Indiana twice at the SIRA Championships this season. Oklahoma finished behind the Hoosiers in the preliminary race, but finished ahead of IU in the Grand Finals.

Oklahoma's second varsity eight races against Minnesota, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Duke at 9:40 a.m. Coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Ally Gray, Melea McCreary, Brooke Sheppard, Abbey LaFollette, Katrin Passlack, Morgan Whinery, Ashley LaFollette and Kat Rabe comprise the second varsity eight.

The OU first varsity eight enters competition as the sixth seed in the south region. The Sooners race at 10:50 a.m., against Miami, Texas, Tennessee, Ohio State and Kansas. The first varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Meghan Farrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchester and Nicole Bladow.

This season the first varsity eight beat Kansas at the Big 12 Championship and the OU Invitational, but fell twice to Texas. The last meeting between OU and Texas was a tight race with the Sooners edged by the Longhorns, six minutes, 41.12 seconds to 6:41.68.

The top three finishers in each heat Saturday advance to the A/B semifinal and the last three finishers move on to the C/D semifinal.
