Getting to Know You with Rebecca Staff

Throughout the 2010 season, SoonerSports.com provides an inside look into OU rowing. This week freshman first varsity eight member Rebecca Staff is on the hot seat.

Favorite moment on the water...
Winning our heat at San Diego Crew Classic. It was the first race we where we had seven boats across and it was the best race we have had yet. We proved to ourselves and everyone else that we are fast. It was a statement, and a really fun race to be in.

Interests outside of rowing...
Sleeping, finding good music, catching up on tv and movies.

Person that most shaped my life...
My parents. They have always pushed me and been just as dedicated as I have been in my sports. They have always believed in me and supported me in going further. Without them I wouldn't have had the successes that I've had in sports throughout my life.

What is your favorite thing to do in Norman?
Tea Café and Orange Tree.

List three words that describe you...
Motivated, focused and loyal.

Name one thing that fans don't know about you...
My dog in Arizona is a standard poodle named Riley, and he has a moustache. He's pretty awesome.

Why did you choose OU?
I chose OU because it's a great school with a tradition for academic and athletic excellence. I wanted to help build the rowing program and I believe that in time we will be a nationally ranked program, and that is something I want to be a part of.

What are your plans after college?
I want to go to the Olympics.

What's your nickname? Reasoning behind it?
Beast. Coach Marina called me B. Staff one day and someone asked if she had just called me Beast because they sounded similar. It's just stuck since then.

Favorite aspect of OU Rowing team...
I love how we go to races and people don't know what to expect from us, and in some respect we don't know what to expect from ourselves. There is no previous record to look at to see how we compare to the teams we will be racing. We are the “dark horse” and it's a pretty fun place to be. So my favorite aspect would have to be how we have surprised a lot of people this year so far, including ourselves.

What's your favorite TV show?
The Office! I also have recently started getting into Modern Family.

Favorite book?
5 People You Meet in Heaven

Favorite restaurant?
Tea Cafe

If you could invite three people to dinner, who would they be?
Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Mike Spracklen.

Most cherished childhood memory?
We took a family trip to England one summer and did a bunch of cool stuff. We saw where my Dad was from, and we went to London and rode the huge Ferris wheel. It was also the first time I rowed. We took a row boat out on a lake by a castle.

What do you picture yourself doing 10 years from now?
I have no idea. I'll probably be doing something that has to do with rowing in Canada.
