Rowing to Compete at Big 12 Championship

NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma rowing team competes in the second annual Big 12 Championship Saturday at 9 a.m. in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Sooners race against in Kansas, Kansas State and Texas in five races on the 2,000-meter course on the Oklahoma River.

Admission for the Big 12 Championship is free. Spectator viewing areas are located along the riverfront at the Chesapeake Boathouse.

Events begin at 9:20 a.m. with the second novice eight, followed by the first novice eight at 9:40, the varsity four at 10:00, the second varsity eight at 10:20 and the first varsity eight at 10:40.

The first varsity eight enters the weekend 2-1 against Big 12 opponents in dual racing this season, having defeated Kansas and Kansas State. The varsity eight is led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Meghan Farrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchester and Nicole Bladow .

Oklahoma's second varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Melea McCreary, Ally Gray, Kat Rabe, Brooke Sheppard, Brooke Homer, Kat Passlack, Abbey LaFollette and Monique Gaines. The second varsity eight is 2-1 this season against this weekend's competition. The Sooners defeated Kansas and Kansas State, but fell short to Texas at the Longhorn Invitational.

The varsity four are 1-2 against conference foes this season, having defeated Kansas State. The Sooners are made up of coxswain Lauren Price, Sam Fahed, Maureen Lewis, Paige Gero and Taylor Rowley.

The Sooner first novice eight led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Brooke Holleman, Kelsey O'Grady, Morgan Whinery, Olivia Staff, Elizabeth Middleton, Heather House and Sara Sherrer. The novice eight defeated Kansas and Kansas State earlier this season.

The second novice eight is comprised of coxswain Tricia Vanscoy, Kiley Poppino, Mary Cox, Lisa Jett, Olivia Coleman, Lena Eagle Road, Ashlyn Hartquist and McKenzie Lee.

Last season at the Big 12 Championship, Oklahoma finished no lower than second place in its three races. The varsity four and first novice eight finished first and the second novice eight finished second.
