Rowing Takes Home Four Medals at SIRAs

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Oklahoma rowing team completed a successful weekend at the SIRA Championships, earning four medals in the Grand Finals.

The first varsity eight placed first in its heat Sunday to advance to the Grand Finals. OU placed second earning a silver medal with a time of 6:55.09, behind Purdue (6:50.6). Indiana took third with a time of 6:56.05, followed by Grand Valley (6:56.43), Tulsa (7:00.74) and Alabama (7:03.99). This is the second time Oklahoma has finished second in the Grand Finals this season.

Oklahoma's second varsity eight also garnered a silver medal in the Grand Finals. After winning its heat Saturday, the Sooners faced Indiana, Purdue, Tulsa, Alabama and Kansas State. OU posted a time of 7:16.89 to finish behind Indiana (7:11.6).

The Sooner varsity four competed against Alabama, Tulsa, Kansas State, Purdue and Indiana in the Grand Finals. The varsity four came away with a bronze medal with a time of 8:13.29, behind Alabama (8:06.1) and Tulsa (8:08.93).

OU's second novice eight came away with the gold medal in the Grand Finals. The novice eight posted the fastest time of 7:26.5 to beat Alabama (7:34.05), Purdue (7:48.67) and William and Mary (8:22.36).

The first novice eight raced Indiana, Alabama, Purdue, Tennessee and Central Oklahoma in the finals, finishing fourth with at time of 7:28.76. Indiana was first (7:16.1), followed by Alabama (7:20.1), Purdue (7:24.01), Oklahoma, Tennessee (7:42.22) and UCO (8:56.59).

In their second year of competition, the Sooners have earned five medals at the SIRA Championships. The medals earned Sunday bring the medal count to one gold, three silvers and one bronze.

Oklahoma races again May 1, at the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla.
