Sooners Set to Compete at SIRA Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma rowing team competes at the SIRA Championships Saturday, April 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The first varsity eight races at 11:12 a.m. CT, against Jacksonville, Indiana, Alabama and SMU, with the top two teams in the heat moving on to the “A” final. Coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Meghan Farrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchester and Nicole Bladow comprise the first varsity eight.
 
The Sooners have faced Alabama and SMU in dual racing this year. At the OU Invitational Oklahoma ran away with the victory against SMU seven minutes.02.5 seconds to 7:13.9, and in Tuscaloosa, Oklahoma edged out the Alabama varsity eight 6:37.5 to 6:46.1.

OU's second varsity eight of coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Melea McCreary, Ally Gray, Kat Rabe, Brooke Sheppard, Brooke Holleman, Brooke Homer, Abbey LaFollette and Kat Passlack race at 2:19 p.m. Racing against Jacksonville, Kansas State, Purdue and Ohio, the second varsity eight must place in the top three to advance to the “A” final.

The second varsity eight races against Big 12 opponent Kansas State for the second time this season Saturday. The last time the Sooners and Wildcats met was at the Longhorn Invitational where OU picked up the win with a time of 7:28.3 to 7:37.8.

Oklahoma's varsity four compete at 3:29 p.m. against SMU, Indiana, Alabama and Nova Southeastern. The top three advance to the “A” final. The varsity four is made up of coxswain Lauren Price, Taylor Rowley, Sam Fahed, Paige Gero and Maureen Lewis.

The Sooners face two familiar teams in SMU and Alabama. The varsity four finished ahead of SMU 8:13.87 to 8:29.33 at the OU Invitational and placed third against Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a time of 8:07.9.

 The first novice eight races Sunday, April 18 at 9:02 a.m. in the “A” final. OU competes against Central Oklahoma, Alabama, Indiana, Purdue and Tennessee-Knoxville. Coxswain Carly Schueler, Ashley LaFollette, McKenzie Lee, Morgan Whinery, Sara Sherrer, Lena Eagle Road, Kelsey O'Grady Elizabeth Blanche and Heather House make up the first novice eight.

The only team Oklahoma has met this season is Alabama. The Sooners were edged out by the Tide 7:01.0 to 7:02.1.

The Sooner second novice eight race Sunday at 8:34 a.m. against Purdue, William and Mary and Alabama in the “A” final. The second novice eight boat is led by coxswain Tricia Vanscoy, Kiley Poppino, Mary Cox, Chloe Troutt, Elizabeth Middleton, Lisa Jett, Olivia Staff, Olivia Coleman and Kaylee Johnson.The second novice eight faced Alabama this season finishing second with a time of 7:40.9
