NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma freshman Jessica Shults has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The honor is the first of her career and the third time this season an Oklahoma player has been awarded by the Big 12.
Shults led OU to a 2-2 record on the week with its only non-conference loss coming at Tulsa in nine innings. The Sooners split the opening conference series with No. 3 Missouri, winning 9-0 in six innings on Sunday. OU also won at Arkansas on Wednesday, 6-1.
Shults hit .455 (5-for-11) with four runs scored and three home runs. She had 14 total bases, drove in nine runs and drew four walks, while producing a 1.273 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage. In the loss to Tulsa, Shults' lone hit was a three-run homer.
In the win over Missouri she led OU with two home runs, tying an Oklahoma single game record. She ended that game 3-for-3 with two runs scored, five runs driven in and one walk. Shults leads the Big 12 in home runs, RBI, total bases and slugging percentage in conference games.
The 13th-ranked Sooners return to action this weekend at Iowa State. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m. CT and Saturday's finale is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
