SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma rowing team closed out competition at the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday with a second-place finish in the first varsity eight and a third-place finish by the first novice eight in the Grand Finals.

San Diego Crew Classic Results

The first varsity eight advanced to the Grand Finals after finishing first in its heat Saturday. The Sooners faced off against San Diego, St. Joseph's, Sacramento State, Tulsa and the Stanford Lightweights in the Women's Cal Cup.

Oklahoma took the lead early, holding on to a three seat lead at the 750-meter mark. San Diego slowly gained on Oklahoma, edging the Sooners out with a last push at the finish line, 7 minutes, 5.10 seconds to 7:07.29. Sacramento State (7:11.66) finished third, Stanford Lightweights (7:16.73), St. Joseph's (7:22.05) and Tulsa (7:22.39) rounded out the field.

"There's nothing more painful then losing a close one in the last 250 meters,” said Head Coach Leeanne Crain. “I think this one will stay with us for a while. San Diego rowed a really gutsy race from behind and simply was the better team today."

OU's first novice eight raced in the Grand Finals after finishing second in its heat Saturday. The Sooners competed against Washington State, UCLA, Minnesota, Sacramento State and USC.

The Sooners raced between the third and fourth place most of the race. Battling Minnesota for third, the novice eight was able to pull away with the bronze edging out Minnesota, 7:27.76 to 7:28.31. The first place finisher was Washington State (7:17.20) and UCLA (7:22.45) was second. Sacramento State (7:38.97) finished fifth and USC (7:39.40) sixth.

Oklahoma returns to action next weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala., against Alabama and Old Dominion.
