NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team heads west this weekend to compete at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Crew Classic is the largest regatta in the world exclusively held for eight oar racing.
The two-day event consists of more than 3,400 athletes competing in 96 races. Starting near Sea World, the course extends north 2,000 meters along Mission Bay, finishing at Crown Points Shores Park.
Oklahoma races the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first novice eight Saturday, March 27. The top two finishers in each heat move on to the Grand Final, with the next two finishers advancing to the Petite Final.
The first varsity eight of coxswain Kelsey Witte, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Meghan Farrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchesters and Nicole Bladow race at 10:20 a.m. CT against St. Joseph's, Trinity, St. Mary's, Orange Coast College, Santa Clara and Arizona State.
The Sooner second varsity eight competes at 12:10 p.m. CT against No. 3 Virginia "A", UCLA, San Diego and SMU. The second varsity eight is led by coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Melea McCreary, Ally Gray, Kat Rabe, Brooke Sheppard, Abbey LaFollette, Maureen Gaines, Brooke Holleman and Maureen Lewis.
OU's first novice eight race Kansas State, San Diego, UC Davis, California Lightweights and Washington State at 1 p.m. CT. The first novice eight is comprised of coxswain Carly Schueler, Taylor Rowley, Ashley LaFollette, Sara Sherrer, Kelsey O'Grady, McKenzie Lee, Kat Passlack, Elizabeth Blanche and Morgan Whinery.
Last season, Oklahoma's novice eights competed against several top programs. The first novice eight finished second in its heat, earning a Grand Final birth. OU was the only non Pac-10 team in the final and finished fifth overall. The second novice eight finished second in its final behind Minnesota.
