Sooners Take Two from UCF

AUSTIN, Texas— The University of Oklahoma rowing team capped of the Longhorn Invitational this weekend with wins from the first varsity eight and the first novice eight against Central Florida.
The Sooner first varsity eight snapped a two race losing streak by defeating UCF, 6:40.8 to 6:42.47. The varsity eight finished 2-2 at the Longhorn Invitational and are 6-2 overall. The first varsity eight was led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Meghan Farrell, Sarah Kelle, Nicole Furmanek, Melea McCreary and Ally Gray.
The first novice eight led the Sooners off with a seven minutes, 05.7 seconds to 7:11.8 defeat of UCF. This was the third win at the Longhorn Invitational for the novice eight who also defeated Kansas State and Louisville. The novice eight is now 7-1 in dual racing.
Oklahoma's first varsity four placed second with a time of 8:00.46 to UCF (7:51.8). The varsity four went 1-3 over the weekend, recording a win over Kansas State.
The second varsity eight posted a time of 6:54.81 finishing behind UCF (6:50.8). This marked the third straight loss for the second varsity eight. Their last win was a 7:53.3 to 8:08.4 defeat of Kansas State. The second varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Brooke Sheppard, Nicole Bladow, Rebecca Winchester, Kat Rabe, Kat Passlack, Brooke Holleman, Monique Gaines and Abbey LaFollette.
Racing for the second time on Lady Bird Lake, the second novice eight posted its fastest time of 7:59.92, but placed behind UCF (7:38.4).
"We've had two solid weekends of racing and the team is continuing to learn how to make adjustments from race to race,” said Head Coach Leeanne Crain. “That's important early in the season. The goal now is to approach every practice with intensity and focus so that we can make the necessary gains in speed we'll need going into the Big 12 Championship. We now know where we stack up against our conference opponents and there's no doubt that we have to get faster."
The next regatta for the Sooners is the San Diego Crew Classic March 27-28 in San Diego, Calif.
