Oklahoma Sweeps Kansas State

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team began the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas this afternoon defeating Big 12 opponent Kansas State in all four races.
The first varsity eight remained unbeaten this season as they defeated Kansas State seven minutes, 31.5 seconds to 7:39.27. Led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Rebecca Staff, Meghan Farrell, Meagan Harrel, Chelsea Moore, Sarah Kelle, Nicole Furmanek, Nicole Bladow and Rebecca Winchester, the first varsity eight is now 5-0. Last weekend at the OU Invitational, the varsity eight placed ahead of Kansas, Creighton, Tulsa and SMU.
Oklahoma's second varsity eight of coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Ally Gray, Melea McCreary, Brooke Sheppard, Kat Rabe, Kat Passlack, Brooke Holleman, Monique Gaines and Abbey LaFollette posted a time of 7:53.3 to finish ahead of Kansas State (8:08.4).
The first novice eight also headed into this weekend unbeated and remained that way after a 8:14.1 to 8:28.2 defeat of Kansas State. The first novice eight consists of coxswain Carly Schueler, Elizabeth Blanche, Ashley LaFollette, Sara Sherrer, Kelsey O'Grady, Lena Eagle Road, Morgan Whinery, McKenzie Lee and Heather House. At the OU Invitational, the novice eight defeated Kansas, Creighton, Tulsa and SMU.
The Sooner first varsity four also defeated the Wildcats 9:28.3 to 9:37.8. The varsity four is led by Haley Brown, Brooke Homer, Maureen Lewis, Paige Gero and Taylor Rowley.
"The team raced with good effort today, although there's still a lot we can improve on," said Head Coach Leeanne Crain. "It's gratifying to go undefeated against a Big 12 opponent, but we definitely need to step up tomorrow and take it to a new level against Texas."
Oklahoma faces Texas in the Saturday morning session and Louisville in the afternoon session. Saturday morning racing has been moved up and the first varsity eight race at 7:54 a.m., the second varsity eight race at 8:02 a.m., the first varsity four race at 8:10 a.m., the first novice eight race at 8:42 a.m. and the second novice eight race at 9:22 a.m.
