Rowing Finishes Day One at the Invitational

Oklahoma City, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma rowing team opened the 2010 season Saturday at the first annual OU Invitational. The Sooners competed in 10 races garnering six first place finishes.

 Day One Results

The first novice eight raced first for the Sooners with a first place finish against Tulsa, seven minutes, 17.5 seconds to 7:24.69. The novice eight was led by coxswain Carly Schueler, Elizabeth Blanche, Ashley LaFollette, Abbey LaFollette, Kelsey O'Grady, Lena Eagle Road, Morgan Whinery, Sara Sherrer and Heather House . The novice then defeated Creighton by a time of 7:17.05 to 7:24.69.

OU's first varsity four competed against Tulsa "A" and Tulsa "B", placing second with a time of 8:15.39. In the second race of the day, the Sooners defeated SMU 8:13.87 to 8:29.33. The varsity ifour s composed of coxswain Haley Brown, Monique Gaines, Taylor Rowley, Brooke Sheppard and Paige Gero.

Oklahoma's second varsity eight led by coxswain Amanda Hoffman, Sam Fahed, Ally Gray, Nicole Bladow, Brooke Holleman, Kat Rabe, Kat Passlack, Brooke Homer and Maureen Lewis placed second to Tulsa, 7:23.9 to 7:19.3. The second varisty then placed first with a time of 7:03.7 to beat SMU (7:12.93)

The first varsity eight of coxswain Kelsey Witten, Meghan Farrell, Rebecca Staff, Chelsea Moore, Meagan Harrell, Nicole Furmanek, Sarah Kelle, Rebecca Winchester and Melea McCreary placed first in both races. The Sooners led from start to finish to edge out Tulsa 7:04.89 to 7:13.77, and SMU 7:02.9 to 7:13.5.

The second novice eight raced in first novice eight competition and placed third with a time of 8:05.24 behind Kansas "A" and Kansas "B".  In the second race, the Sooners finished second to Tulsa with a time of 7:23.9.
"The varsity squad did a good job of making adjustments today between the first and second sessions of racing," said Head Coach Leeanne Crain.  "We weren't quite aggressive enough this morning, but came out ready to race in the afternoon.  The first novice eight also had a great day."

OKlahoma is back on the water Sunday at 8 a.m.
