Sooners Open Strong at Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Oklahoma rowing team took to the water Saturday for their first regatta of the fall season. The Sooners started the afternoon in the 4000-meter collegiate eights race. Of the four boats entered, Oklahoma placed two in the top 12 to qualify for the OG&E Night Sprints on Saturday evening.
“It has been a great day,” Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “Our kids have raced a lot and are gaining valuable experience. The 500 meter night sprints were fast and furious, and provided a nice break from all of the long distance training we've been doing this fall. All in all it has been a solid day of racing for the Sooners.”
In the 4000-meter collegiate eights race, the Sooners top boat led by coxswain Kelsey Witten and rowers Meghan Farrell, Meagan Harrell, Nikki Furmanek, Rebecca Staff, Brooke Sheppard, Sarah Kelle, Amber Coyne, and Katie Klassen finished sixth with a time of 14 minutes, 33.504 seconds to advance to the grand finals. The “B” boat, led by Amanda Hoffman and rowers Kat Rabe, Ashley La Follette, Nicole Bladow, Morgan Whinery, Paige Gero, Melissa Simpson, Markayla Adam, and Kelsey O'Grady finished 11th (14:55.632) to go to the petites. Boat “C” led by Carley Schueler and rowers Melea McCreary, Brooke Holleman, Chloe Troutt, Elizabeth Middleton, Brooke Homer, Kaylee Johnson, Nikki Eagle Road, and Taylor Rowley finished 15th (15:17.192). Boat “D” led by Tricia Vanscoy and rowers Sam Fahed, Maureen Lewis, Elizabeth Blanche, Katy Cox, Belle Stixrood, Sara Sherrer, Kiley Poppino and Heather House finished 22nd (15:46.798).
The Sooners fielded three eights in Saturday evening's 500-meter OG&E Night Sprints. In the petite final, Oklahoma took first (01:28.200) and third (01:35.800). In the collegiate eight grand final, the Sooners finished third (01:34.700) behind Stanford (01:31.400) and Washington State (01:31.300).
In the 4000-meter collegiate fours race, Oklahoma entered three boats with the top boat, led by Hoffman and rowers Rabe, La Follette, Bladow, and Whinery, finishing eighth (15:57.864) the “B” boat led by Schueler and rowers Gero, Simpson, Adam, and O'Grady finished 15th (16:26.837). The “C” boat, led by Vanscoy and rowers McCreary, Holleman, Troutt and Katrin Passlack finished 21st (16:59.601). OU advanced the “A” boat to the grand final, while the “B” boat earned a spot in the petite final.
The Oklahoma “B” four finished third (01:55.900) in the petite final. In the grand final, the Sooners finished fourth (01:50.400) behind Stanford (01:50.300), Washington State (01:48.500), and Tulsa (01:46.900).
The Sooners continue competition tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. CT with the collegiate singles followed by the collegiate pairs at 9 a.m. and the open fours at 10:55 a.m.
