NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma rowing team competes in the first regatta of the season this weekend, Oct. 9-10 in Oklahoma City at the Head of the Oklahoma. The event takes place on the Oklahoma River and is hosted by Oklahoma City University. Oklahoma competes in the 4000-meter races and the 500-meter OG&E Night Sprints.

"The team is excited about the competition this weekend," Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "We've got some great teams coming to town, including Stanford, Washington State, Iowa, and of course, the Big 12 programs.  We've been spending most of the fall training in the big boats concentrating on technical improvements and this regatta gives us a chance to see the progress we've made."

The Sooners field four varsity boats in the collegiate eights, three varsity boats in the collegiate fours, four varsity boats in the collegiate pairs, two varsity boats in the open fours, and two varsity boats in the open singles.

The collegiate eights will head off at 12:30 p.m. CT Saturday, followed by the collegiate fours at 4:20 p.m. OG&E Night Sprints for the collegiate eights are scheduled for 8 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. and the sprints for collegiate fours are scheduled for 9:20 and 9:50 p.m.

On Sunday, the collegiate singles head off at 8:45 a.m., followed by the collegiate pairs at 9 a.m., and open fours at 10:55 a.m.

To advance to grand finals in the OG&E Night Sprints, Oklahoma has to place in the top six. Places seven through 12 advance to the petite finals.

The race will kick off from Regatta Park which is located at 725 S. Lincoln Boulevard in Oklahoma City. The race will be viewable from the Walker, Robinson, Shields, SW 15th, Byers and I-35 bridges. For more information visit the Head of the Oklahoma website.

The Sooners raced a total of seven boats at the 2009 Boot of the Oklahoma. Five boats finished in the top 12. Of the three varsity eight boats, two qualified in the finals with one headed to the grand finals and the other to the petites. The grand final qualifier finished second overall and the petite final qualifier finished in fourth. Of the three varsity fours that competed, two finished in the top 12 in fourth and ninth place. The novice eight finished in second.
