NORMAN, Okla. — University of Oklahoma track and field head coach Martin Smith announced Wednesday that four student-athletes have joined the Oklahoma men's program over the winter break. The group consists of three transfers and one early high school graduate and is led by Bethune-Cookman transfer Ronnie Ash who claimed 2009 NCAA titles in the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles. Ash will be joined by two Barton County Community College athletes in Malcolm Anderson and Remuro Henry while Aaron Thompson joins the program after graduating early from Archbishop Riordan high school in San Francisco, Calif.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Ash enters the indoor season as the nation's top-ranked athlete in the 60-meter hurdles after claiming the crown in 2009 with a time of 7.63. The junior, who ended the 2009 outdoor season ranked 13th in the world, also won the 110-meter hurdles crown with a time of 13.27.
Originally from Miami, Fla., Anderson enters the hurdles program with Ash after earning NJCAA All-America honors at Barton County. Anderson finished third nationally in both the 55-meter hurdles in the indoor season and the 110-meter hurdles during the outdoor season. Coming out of high school, Anderson was the top-ranked 300-meter hurdler in the state of Florida.
Also originally from Miami, Fla., Henry will look to compete in the 400-meter dash at OU, an event he earned NJCAA All-American status in at Barton County with a personal best of 46.61 at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships where he took fourth. During the indoor season, Henry finished fourth in the event at the NJCAA Championships with a time of 48.04. Henry was also a part of the school's 4x400-meter relay that claimed the 2009 NJCAA national title and the 4x100-meter relay that took fourth.
Thompson will concentrate on the high jump and long jump while at OU after recording top-10 finishes in both events at the California State Championships during his high school career. Thompson enrolls at OU with personal bests of 6-8.00 in the high jump and 23-9.00 in the long jump.
