Q&A with Coach Crain

NORMAN, Okla. -- After a successful inaugural season for the Oklahoma rowing program, the Sooners are anxious to get back on the water and compete for a Big 12 Championship in 2010. Leading up to the first regatta of the season , SoonerSports.com provides an inside look into OU rowing. This week Head Coach Leeanne Crain is on the hot seat.

What was your favorite moment on the water?
“November 21, 2009. We put five mixed line-ups on the water for an inter-squad scrimmage. It was at that moment that I realized we would have the bodies to field a full team at the Big 12 Championship. In only our second year, and with only a handful of recruited athletes in the program, we had managed to assemble a squad of close to 50 athletes. This year's team is young and inexperienced, but we have a tremendous opportunity to go out and make a statement when we race this spring. “

What is the most interesting place you have competed/coached?
“Coaching in Florida was an adventure because you never knew when an alligator would pop up out of the water.”

What do you enjoy most about coaching?
“Watching the student-athletes develop as people. Athletics teaches us so many valuable lessons. Over the course of four years, these young women mature into leaders, ready to go out into the world and make it a better place. It's gratifying as a coach to be part of the process.”

Who do you model your coaching style after?
“The good thing about being at a place like OU is that you're surrounded by so many great coaches. I guess if I had to pick one coach it would be John Wooden, because for him, it was more than about the game of basketball-- it was about being accomplished in all areas of life.”

What do you like most about OU?
“Sooner Pride. There is a true sense of family at this institution that doesn't exist at most places.”

What is your favorite OU tradition?
“Boomer and Sooner are by far the best mascots in college athletics. I love watching the Sooner Schooner being pulled through the end zone after scoring a touchdown."

Where is your favorite place to eat in Norman?
“Blu. Good food and great atmosphere.”

What do you do outside of coaching?
“I love to get out on my road bike and ride.”

List three words that describe you.
“Patient. Demanding. Loyal.”

If you could coach any other sport what would it be?
“Cycling or skiing. I love being outdoors in wide open spaces where there is a sense of freedom and adventure.”
