NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma vice president for intercollegiate athletics programs and director of athletics Joe Castiglione and head rowing coach Leeanne Crain announced the Sooners' 2009-10 schedule on Wednesday.
The fall season kicks off on Sept. 19 with a dual meet against SMU in Dallas. Fall regattas include the Head of the Charles in Boston, Head of the Colorado in Austin, Texas and Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn. Oklahoma will race on its home course on October 3-4 at the Boot of the Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.
"The fall season will provide numerous racing opportunities for our young team," said Crain. "Head of the Charles is the premier event on the fall schedule. The atmosphere at the race is unbelievable, with thousands of spectators lining the Charles River. It will be a great experience for our athletes."
The Sooners host two regattas in the spring beginning with the OU Invitational March 13-14 and the Big 12 Championship on May 1. The Sooners will compete in dual format racing against Kansas, SMU, and Tulsa at the OU Invitational. The spring season also features several premier regattas including the San Diego Crew Classic, a race that features top teams from around the nation, and the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Oklahoma travels to Austin, Texas for the Longhorn Invitational and faces Alabama and Old Dominion in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before heading to the NCAA South/Central Regionals.
"We've got a very competitive schedule that will serve us well as we continue to develop the program in our second year," Crain said. "Our regular season schedule is solid. We'll be on the road a lot in March and April, but I believe experience gained in the early season will pay off when we get to the Big 12 championship in May."
