NORMAN, Okla. — Nine athletes from the University of Oklahoma are in Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships that begin tomorrow. As a group, the nine account for 12 total entries in the four-day event hosted by the University of Arkansas at the John McDonnell Track.
With seven entries, the OU women's program made a six-spot jump in the national rankings to No. 17 nationally while the men come in at No. 28. All three men qualified for the event are freshmen while the six women consist of just two seniors.
Five OU athletes and one relay enter the competition ranked in the top 10 nationally led by triple jumper Will Claye. Claye leads the nation in the event, with a season-best distance of 55-9.75 (17.01). The Big 12 and NCAA Midwest Regional champion broke a 27-year old U.S. Junior National record in May at the Big 12 Championships. Claye is also ranked 12th nationally in the long jump with a top jump of 25-6.25 (7.78). The 17-year old will look to earn All-America honors in each event after doing so with a second-place finish in the triple jump and a third-place finish in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Finals for the triple jump are scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m., Claye's 18th birthday.
Leslie Cole ranks second nationally in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.55 and will battle once more with Texas A&M's Jessica Beard, ranked first in the event. The senior will look to earn her fourth All-America honor and second in the 400.
Ti'Anca Mock is OU's third athlete ranked in the top three nationally, coming in at No. 3 in the women's long jump. Mock's best jump of 21-9.50 (6.64) marks the best in program history for the Big 12 champion in the event. Mock earned All-America honors in the event during the indoor season.
The women's 4x100-meter relay of Sherine Wells, Scottesha Miller, Cole and Mock ranks fifth in the nation with a program-record time of 43.68 from the NCAA Midwest Regional in Norman. Wells, a freshman, is the only Sooner of the experienced group without an appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Miller is one of OU two OU athletes who will be competing in the both the 100- and 200-meter dash as Mookie Salaam does so on the men's side. Both enter the meet ranked eighth nationally in the 200 while Miller is 16th in the 100 and Salaam, a freshman, 17th. Both recorded season-best times in the events at the NCAA Midwest Regional to qualify for NCAAs as Miller clocked times of 11.39 and 23.22 and Salaam finished in 10.30 and 20.54.
Rounding out the group of first-year Oklahoma men competing in the event is Big 12 discus champion Luke Bryant. The redshirt freshman is ranked 12th in the event with a throw of 192-1 (58.56).
Staying in the throws area on the women's side, the OU contingent is rounded out by hammer thrower Mikaela Johansson and Amy Backel competing in the shot put. Johansson is ranked 17th nationally in her event with a top toss of 196-5 (59.87) while Backel is 25th in the shot with a season-best attempt of 51-9.25 (15.78).
Oklahoma action at the event kicks off Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Johansson competing in the hammer throw.
