NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma triple jumper Will Claye pulled in his latest accolade on Monday when he was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year. The honor comes as the 17-year old enters this week's NCAA Championships as the nation's leading triple jumper and the 11th-ranked long jumper.
After leaving high school early and enrolling at OU in January, Claye had high expectations and has yet to disappoint. After earning Indoor All-America honors in both the long jump and triple jump, Claye has established himself as the nation's top triple jumper on the outdoor level while qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the long jump as well.
When the freshman won the Big 12 triple jump title in May, he broke a 27-year old U.S. Junior National Record in the process and was named the USATF Athlete of the Week for his efforts. Throughout the outdoor season Claye has broken the Oklahoma program record in the triple jump along with the Big 12 Championship meet record, the NCAA Midwest Regional meet record and Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track and Field Complex facility record.
Claye will compete in the prelims of the long jump on Wednesday at 4 p.m. with finals of the event Thursday at 4:45 p.m. Prelims for the triple jump are Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the finals on Saturday, Claye's 18th birthday, at 12 p.m.
