NORMAN, Okla. — Nine current student-athletes from the University of Oklahoma Track and Field program along with three OU alums head west this weekend to Eugene, Ore., to take on the nation's best athletes in the 2009 USA Track and Field Championships contested at the legendary Hayward Field. The 12 athletes from the Oklahoma program account for 15 entries in the event, eight in the senior division and seven in the junior division, as the senior athletes vie for a spot on the U.S. National Team competing at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin while the junior athletes compete for inclusion on the U.S. National Team for the Pan American Junior Championships in Trinidad & Tobago.
Leslie Cole leads the way in the senior division as the only Oklahoma athlete to have currently achieved the IAAF “A” standard needed to automatically qualify for inclusion on the U.S. National Team, having done so in both the 200- and 400-meter dash. Cole will be joined by Scottesha Miller in the 200-meter dash, an event Miller has reached the IAAF “B” standard in.
Two current Sooners, Ti'Anca Mock (long jump) and Karen Shump (shot put), enter the weekend seeded eighth in their respective events. The Big 12 champion in both the indoor and outdoor long jump, Mock is second among collegiate competitors in the event while Shump, who redshirted in her first year in Norman, is also second among all college competitors behind the 2009 NCAA shot put runner-up, Sarah Stevens of Arizona State.
The seven entries in the U.S. Junior Championships, all freshmen in the men's division, shows a bright future for the Oklahoma men's program. The group is led by the 2009 NCAA triple jump champion, Will Claye, who enters the meet with the top qualifying mark in both the triple and long jump. Claye will be joined in the long jump by classmate Alex Madkins. Madkins is ranked sixth in the event.
The track portion of the junior event will feature three first-year Sooners led by Mookie Salaam ranked second in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Kevin Williams, who redshirted his first year in the program, enters the 5,000-meter run ranked 10th overall while Ross Larimer is set to compete in the 1,500-meter run.
Three alums will compete in field events in the senior division as Kevin Bookout (shot put), Shardae Boutte (triple jump) and Toni Smith (triple jump) continue their quest in the athletics ring. Smith enters the meet ranked second overall in the women's triple jump with anyone from the field yet to eclipse the “A” standard. Boutte is ranked eighth in the men's division of the event while Bookout looks to return to the prominence in the shot ring after leaving the sport for a brief period.
To qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, an athlete must either be a reigning World Champion who competes at the U.S. Championships or finish in the top three in event provided they have achieved the IAAF “A” standard. The next ranked order finisher shall serve as the alternate, provided that they have achieved the IAAF “B” standard.
For the U.S. Junior National Team at the Pan American Junior Championships, July 31-Aug. 2nd, the USATF selects the top two finishers in each event to represent the team.
