NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma rowing team returns to the water to compete in the NCAA South/Central Regional, May 16-17 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Melton Hill Lake.
Although OU will not qualify to earn points at the regional due to OU only fielding one varsity boat, Coach Leeanne Crain sees the competition as a great opportunity for her young program.
“Our work this year will be put to the test this weekend when we go up against the top teams out of the Big 10, ACC, Big East and Conference USA,” Crain said. “The team is well prepared, so hopefully the results on the water will reflect the hard work this squad has put in this season.”
The Sooners experienced success in Oak Ridge this season when they raced at the SIRA Championships. The novice four won two races to advance to the Grand Final to finish second and the varsity eight notched a second place finish in the Petite Final.
The varsity four, led by coxswain Lauren Price, Teddi Dwyer, Chelsea Moore, Elena Engles and Meagan Harrell, race Saturday at 8:00 a.m. CT in the open four event. Oklahoma faces Tennessee, Virginia “B”, Wisconsin and Indiana. The top three finishers in the heat advance to the A/B semifinals and the top three finishers in the semifinals advance to the Grand Final.
Oklahoma's first novice eight faces Kansas State, Virginia “A”, Ohio State and Clemson at 8:50 a.m. Saturday. The Sooners are 1-1 against Kansas State this year, with an early season loss at the Longhorn Invitational but a strong win over the Wildcats at the Big 12 Championship where the eight placed first. The novice eight is led by coxswain Kelsey Witten, Laura Moon, Brooke Sheppard, Cara Bowers, Sarah Kelle, Heather McDonald, Caroline Brannin, Lindsay Hemingway and Monique Gaines.
The second novice eight races Saturday at 9:00 a.m. versus Kansas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Central Florida and Alabama. OU is 1-0 versus Kansas this season, defeating the Jayhawks at the Big 12 Championship.
The novice eight competition sees the top four finishers in each heat moving on to the A/B semifinal and the top three finishers from the semifinal advancing to the Grand Final.
