LUBBOCK, Texas — Oklahoma senior Mikaela Johansson finished third in the hammer throw Friday evening during the first day of competition at the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships to give her team its first six points of the event. Competing in the throws area at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track Complex, Johansson made it on the medal stand with a NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 191-11 (58.50) on her third attempt of the competition.
The Oklahoma record holder in the event, Johansson was in second after the first round of attempts with a throw of 186-0 (56.69). The Swedish native then recorded her top throw on her second attempt and fell into third place where she held steady throughout the remainder of the event. Johansson entered the event ranked fourth in the Big 12 with a season best throw of 196-5 (59.87).
On the men's side Buck Sullivan, also a program record holder, picked up a team point in the hammer with an eight-place finish in the event. Sullivan's top throw of 186-2 (56.76) came on his third attempt enabling the junior to advance to the finals of the event in fifth place where he was unable to improve on the mark, falling eventually to eighth.
The two now turn their focus to the NCAA Midwest Regional, May 29-30, at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman. Johansson currently ranks third in the Midwest Region in the hammer while Sullivan is ninth.
Oklahoma action at the 2009 Big 12 Championships picks back up Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with Paul Gill in the men's high jump. Action on the track begins at 6 p.m. with the Lindsay Pierson in the women's 1,500-meter run.
