NORMAN, Okla. — Sixteen student-athletes from the University of Oklahoma Track and Field program were named to the 2009 Big 12 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field team the Conference announced Wednesday. Four OU athletes were named to the team with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, accounting for more than a quarter of the 15 total conference athletes who accomplished the feat. No other Big 12 institution had at least four athletes with 4.0 GPAs.
Amy Backel (civil engineering), Frankie Green (human relations), Mikaela Johansson (public relations) and Chelsea Jones (zoology) all recorded a perfect 4.0 mark. For Backel, it marked the second consecutive year to earn perfect grades.
It was also a first team repeat performance by Backel, Green and aviation major Rob Sorrell. The three were part of 13 Sooners to be named first team, joined by Johansson, Jones, D'Andre Fisher (human relations), Scott Cooper (marketing), Leslie Cole (sociology), Jessica Engel (undecided major), Amanda Mayfield (multidisciplinary studies), Lindsay Pierson (health and exercise sciences), Kelly Waters (chemical engineering) and Lauren Watson (psychology).
Buck Sullivan (multidisciplinary studies), Chris Sweeney (marketing) and Demeeka Jones (pre-HSS) were all named to the second team.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 96 first team members combined with 36 on the second team, while the women had 114 first team recipients and 32 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
