NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma junior shortstop Amber Flores has been named a top 25 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Flores joins the nation's best players on the list to determine college softball's top player. Flores currently leads Oklahoma and the Big 12 in a majority of statistical categories.

Hailing from Calexico, Calif., Flores leads Oklahoma in batting average, hitting .442 on the year. She is 42-of-95 with 41 runs driven in and 42 scored on the year. While having 95 official at-bats, Flores has registered one sacrifice fly, been hit by a pitch 13 times and leads the team with 33 walks drawn. Her slugging percentage stands at an astounding .874. She reaches base 62 percent of the time.

According to the ASA, this award, which is considered the most prestigious honors in Division I women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA's Stacey Nuveman, Florida State's Jessica Van der Linden, Tennessee's Monica Abbott and Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher.

The top 25 list represents 17 schools and seven different NCAA Division I Conferences. The list is comprised of nine seniors, 12 juniors, three sophomores and one freshman. The 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be chosen from the 25 finalists.  

Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 6. The three finalists will be announced May 20th, while the winner of the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
