Boot of The Oklahoma Preview

NORMAN, Okla.—The University of Oklahoma rowing team competes in its second regatta of the season Saturday, October 3 in Oklahoma City at the Boot of the Oklahoma. The Boot of the Oklahoma takes place on the Oklahoma River and is hosted by Oklahoma City University. Oklahoma competes in the 4000 meter races and the 500 meter stampede races.

The Sooners are fielding three varsity boats in the collegiate eight, four boats in the collegiate four and one novice boat in the collegiate novice eight.

The collegiate eight squares off at 10 a.m., followed by the collegiate four at 1:45 p.m. and the novice eight at 2:15 p.m. in the 4000 meter races. The stampede races for the collegiate eight are scheduled for 4:42 and 4:48 p.m. and the finals for the collegiate four are scheduled for 6:18 and 6:24 p.m.

To advance to Grand Finals in the stampede sprints, Oklahoma has to place in the top six. Places seven to 12 advance to the Petite Finals.

“We have some good teams coming to town this weekend including Texas and Kansas,”Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “The team has been doing a great job on the water this past month, and with such a young squad, we've been placing an emphasis on taking it slow to focus on establishing good technique in the early season. We've seen some big improvements from a lot of our kids and it will be interesting to see how we fare against our Big 12 opponents.

We are doubling up our varsity athletes and racing them in the eights and fours. Most of them will race at least twice and some up to four times on Saturday. Our goal is for all of our boats to do well enough in the head racing to qualify for the 500 meter sprints in the afternoon.”
