NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma senior Samantha Ricketts has been named team captain for the 2009 softball season. The announcement was made Friday evening at the team's annual Meet the Sooners dinner.
“Samantha was the obvious choice by the team to take over as captain,” said Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso. “She took a step forward last season, following Savannah Long's example as our captain. Samantha really wanted to wear the “C” on her uniform, identifying her as captain of the Oklahoma Sooners. It is a great honor for her and very well deserved.”
The team selected the captain based on characteristics such as work ethic, positive attitude and consistency both on and off the field.
“This is a huge honor for me,” Ricketts said. “I realize it comes with a lot of responsibility, and I appreciate my teammates believing that I can handle this job. I hope to lead the team both on and off the field and be approachable to both my teammates and coaches when situations arise.”
Oklahoma begins the 2009 campaign Feb. 5-7 at the Hawai'i Paradise Classic in Honolulu. The Sooners open at home on Feb. 18, hosting Stephen F. Austin in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the OU Softball Complex.
